In Beaufort County, applications for marriage licenses must be submitted at least 24 hours prior to the ceremony because there is a waiting period between the application and the issuance. The licenses must be picked up before the ceremony. Both parties must apply in person (no stand-ins or proxies) and bring valid identification with documentary evidence of age and proof of Social Security number (or Alien Identification number). You will need to apply at the Probate Court at the County Government Center in Beaufort between 9am and 5pm Monday through Friday (843-255-5850) or at the Court's satellite office on Hilton Head Island. The Probate Court Satellite Office is located at 539 Wm. Hilton Parkway, Hilton Head Island, SC (843-255-5866); the Hilton Head office is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Fridays, 9am-4pm, by appointment only. You may pick up your license at the Island office even if you made the application in Beaufort.
DO NOT FORGET TO PICK UP YOUR LICENSE AT THE PROBATE COURT OFFICE BEFORE YOUR WEDDING! YOU MUST TAKE IT TO THE CEREMONY FOR YOUR OFFICIANT TO SIGN AND RETURN TO BE PROPERLY RECORDED!
The price for a marriage license is $50 if both parties are Beaufort County residents, $75 if at least one person is a resident of South Carolina, and $95 if neither party is a South Carolina resident; payment must be made in exact cash. Each party must be at least 18 to marry without parental consent and at least 16 with parental consent. The state of South Carolina does not require blood tests or physicals. Ceremonies may be performed by a Notary Public or a minister; South Carolina has no Justices of the Peace.
